Our second grade choir and sixth grade narrators performed a special Veteran’s Day concert – “United We Stand” – for the residents of Sterling House in northwest Gainesville today.  Under the direction of music teacher Becky Benz, the students sang a patriotic tribute to America with historical narration provided by the older elementary students.  At the close of the concert, students and residents spent time together visiting and sharing.

According to assistant principal Arica Heise, who helped organize the trip, it was a great experience for students and residents alike.  “It was clear that the residents enjoyed our students, and delighted in their performance,” she noted, adding, “Our students were genuinely engaged in visiting with the residents and taking time to listen to them share stories.”

The trip to Sterling House is part of a larger effort by The Rock School to help students learn to honor the older generations, and is the first of several trips planned to various facilities throughout the community.  Our fifth grade students have monthly visits scheduled to The Village and several of our classes will be organizing Christmas concerts at other local assisted living centers.

The Rock School’s varsity volleyball team traveled to Dayton, Tennessee, this week to compete in the National Association of Christian Athletes (NACA) Volleyball National Tournament. The team swept through pool play to earn a spot in Division 1 competition. After a quarterfinal loss to Calumet Christian (Indiana), the team battled back through the losers bracket of the double-elimination tournament to reach the finals for a second shot at Calumet. Playing in their fifth match of the day, the team was already tired. Due to severe weather, there were a number of power outages that delayed the start of the match until after 11:30 p.m. After splitting the first two sets, the Lady Lions came up short in the decisive third set against Calumet (the three-time defending champion).

Madison Wyatt, Allie Card, and Brianna Smith-Hines were named to the All-Tournament Team. Madison was also named top setter.

The Rock completed their first season under Head Coach Stephanie Wyatt with a 32-7 record.
